Susie Ray is a highly acclaimed pioneering Copyist, living here in Cornwall. Commissioned by private collectors, celebrities, corporations, and museums across the world, this is a unique opportunity to learn from one of the best in the industry and really advance your painting skills.
We offer a range of Impressionist Painting Workshops including two day and five day courses.
We currently offer the five day Van Gogh course which is limited to only 4 people and upon which you will learn everything you could wish to know about painting like this great master.

Why Impressionism?
Learning the techniques of the Impressionists is a really fun way of expanding your skills. These exciting techniques can then be brought into your furture works and open up new avenues for you to explore.
Under the guidance of Susie Ray, the expert Copyist, you’ll also be taking home a copy of a masterpiece that will no doubt impress your friends and family when they come to visit.
Learning these techniques will allow you to paint in more innovative and radical way than perhaps you are used to. A great way to feed or reignite your passion.
The Workshops
Susie will take you through stage by stage of creating a Van Gogh so you can fully understand the process. From stretching and preparing your canvas to working on fine Belgian linen and creating his distinctive brush strokes using oil paints and brushes that will all be provided for you.
As Susie guides you through the process, ensuring you have a comprehensive grasp of the techniques and developing the painting over the five days, you’ll be able to immerse yourself fully in the creative process with tea, coffee and cakes being served throughout in the warm naturally lit, spacious studio.
You will leave with a feeling of accomplishment, energy and a new collection of skills and knowledge to go on to incorporate into your work at home.
Workshop Structure:
An Impressionist Painting Class includes:
Welcome and workshop introduction
Introduction to technique followed by a demonstrations from Susie
Finest Belgian hand made Canvas
Oil paints and brushes
Easels, aprons and any tools or additives provided
Copies of the original masterpiece printed and colour matched ready for you to work from.
One to one support with technique throughout the week from Susie Ray
Only 4 attendees per workshop to ensure that Susie is able to work with each artist individually throughout the five days
Tea, coffee and cakes served throughout, bring lunch or pre order a pasty!
A level of skill in oil painting is required for this workshop. Please bring lunch or organise directly with Susie if you would like us to get you a pasty!
Five Day Courses
These courses are available for individuals or groups of up to 4. Intensive but very enjoyable you will be taken step by step through the process of creating your own impressionist masterpiece.
Using your newly acquired techniques you will work under Susie’s gentle guidance to build up your canvas using oil paints and materials provided by the studio.
This is a very special and unique opportunity for artist in or visiting Cornwall. We are currently offering Van Gogh Five Day courses however we are able to deliver a similar course for any of the great Impressionists.
