Scottish Colourists 2 Day Workshops with Susie Ray
For those with intermediate or some skills.
An intensive two day immersion into the oil painting techniques of Peploe and the Scottish Colourists.
Susie loved the idea of teaching the techniques of the great Scottish Colourists, a style she is very well known for, here in Cornwall so in 2023 she held her first Scottish Colourist Workshop. The success of this workshop has lead us to continue to offer these two day workshops which really focus on the flow and texture used by this inspirational group of artists and help you to incorporate them into your own paintings of the Cornish Seascape.
This fun, two day course, suitable for those who wish to immerse themselves in new oil painting techniques. This is a great way to really advance your oil painting skills in a relaxed and comfortable environment, with a master copyist on-hand to help guide you in the right direction.

The Process
The painting you will be working from is Roses by Samuel John Peploe 1871-1935
You will learn new skills which you can take home and incorporate into your own work, including things like adding marble dust to create a really chalky impasto style effect.
We will examine the colours, flow and texture used by the Scottish Colourists, exploring how the likes of Peploe and Cadell painted using oil and board. We will develop the skills over the two days culminating in you using these techniques to create your own Peploe Flower still life.

The 2 Day Workshop
You’ll begin by watching Susie as she talks you through the main techniques. Looking at colour selection, layering, brush strokes and how to build up the signature texture and flow in easy to follow steps. Susie will guide you through working in the style of the Scottish Colourists and take time throughout the workshop to ensure you are progressing well.
You will work a classic flower and still life painting with colour correct prints provided by Susie to guide you. Susie will be on hand to help you put into practice all you have learnt.
You will leave with a feeling of accomplishment and a new collection of skills and knowledge to incorporate into your oil paintings at home.

Welcome and workshop introduction
Introduction to technique followed by a demonstrations from Susie
All the materials including pre-primed canvas, oil paints, additives & easels.
Images from the Scottish Colourist and coastal views to choose from to inspire your work
Support with technique throughout the two days from Susie Ray
A limited number of attendees to ensure that Susie is able to work with each artist individually throughout the two days
Tea, coffee and cakes will be served throughout to you can concentrate on immersing yourself in this fun creative process.
